The Student of Prague is a German horror , fantasy , and silent film from 1926. It premiered on October 25, 1926, in Berlin. Directed by Henrik Galeen, it starred Conrad Veidt in the title role. It is the second film adaptation of the horror story of the same name by Hans Heinz Ewers . This remake largely followed Ewers's draft of the 1913 original screenplay . Filming took place between July and September 1926 in the DLS studios in Berlin-Staaken , and the premiere of The Student of Prague was on October 25, 1926, at the Berlin Capitol . In Austria, the film was first shown on January 14, 1927. There, it also received a sound version, which was first shown in Vienna on July 25, 1930, but was never shown in Germany. For the up-and-coming Romanian actress Elizza La Porta , who had previously been little known and had only played supporting roles, The Student of Prague marked her breakthrough, playing one of the two leading female roles . The young producer Henry R. Sokal scored his first success with this film. Sokal also took over production management, and the film sets were designed by Hermann Warm . Erich Kober , who had a small role as a student, also served as Galeen's assistant director, while his colleague Max Maximilian , also briefly seen as a student, also took over production management.
